Thanks For Having Me, Milton Jones
THANKS A LOT, MILTON JONES
SERIES 6, EPISODE 5: OIL OF ULEZ
GUEST STARRING TOM CROWLEY
ON BBC SOUNDS NOW!
Gosh! Wow! Yes, that’s me officially ‘guest starring’ in a Radio 4 comedy: no less than the brilliant Thanks A Lot, Milton Jones, an ingenious sketch/sitcom hybrid vehicle for the gleefully silly antics of fictional character and real life comedian Milton Jones. The current sixth series is, as ever, produced by David Tyler of Pozzitive Productions, and I’m immensely grateful to him for asking me along to play all the extra parts in this latest episode. I got to do my favourite thing, that being ‘about a hundred voices’, and as if that weren’t enough, having the ten-jokes-per-second script by Milton, James Cary and Dan Evans to work with was an absolute gift.
Thanks A Lot, Milton Jones sees the titular Milton attempting to tackle society’s great quandaries, whether it be crime, punishment, war, peace or the Brothers Karamazov. In this case, it’s the battle between petrol users, anti-emissions protestors and transport administrators. No spoilers, but suffice to say that no meaningful solutions of any kind are found and a lot of fun is had along the way. Especially by me, who, as you can see in the image above, got to play with Josie Lawrence, Tom Goodman-Hill and Milton Jones, three people who fit firmly into the ‘comedy royalty’ category. I managed not to freak out and start singing or anything, so you should all feel very proud of me.
I hope you get the chance to listen to the episode, it really is a barrel of larfs! And if you’re planning to, best move quickly as it’s only up on BBC Sounds for thirty days or so, although of course it will be available for purchase as a digital download from Pozzitive and on Audible and all other quality audio merchants shortly afterwards. See if you can withstand the atomic weight of daft jokes being dished out!
